BookClub (Next "Miriam's Kitchen" Nov 21, 7:30pm)
The bookclub is in full swing with second generation enjoying each other's company and ideas... as we read through many Holocaust related books.  It you are interested, or think you might be, let us know.  The group is "self-run" and votes on the books, and is hosted by members (who want to).  It's been very special, and I'm excited to be coordinating it (Cheri - on the board). More details including to attend our next get together, email genafter-owner@yahoogroups.com.

Survivor Support
Surivors are reaching an age where getting around & coordinating events is harder. Several board members have formed a group to meet with the Survivors' group(s) and see how we can be of assistance.  Keep your eyes open, & if you would like to participate in ways to help them -- let us know.  One way we can help is to offer to drive them to programs we are attending.

Yom HaShoah (April 19, 2012)
For the annual community Yom Hashoah, several board members have formed a group to attend the planning meetings to guide on the interests of the Survivors & Generations After.  The entire community is welcome.
If you have ideas, please bring them to us.

Yad Vashem - Name Project
They are sponsoring a project to collect all the names of those who perished.  Two of our Generation After members will be reporting to the board on the project & what we might want to do regarding it.

Social Event
We're thinking of a BBQ in the summer, or an event connected to one of the many Jewish holidays in the year, Tu'Bshvat, Succot....  If you would like to help or have ideas - please be in touch!

Speakers, Panels
We had several speaker & panel ideas we are pursuing.  Deborah Lipshatz has a new book being published, a DP camp panel, an expert on the Jewish community's history in Greece, an expert on resistance, & several other ideas.  We'll be setting up programs they fall into place.

Smorgasbord of Exciting Project Ideas We've been Exploring

In addition to our upcoming programs, several exciting projects are possiblities.  For these projects we need your help and interest!

TEACHING OF THE HOLOCAUST WITH SURVIVORS
Our new board member, Alex Kor, is working putting students in face to face contact with survivors to enhance the educational experience. For more information and to help, please contact us.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE FOR COPING WITH AGING PARENTS
Several members have expressed interest in creating a buddy system to support getting parents to appointments, support-group style get togethers, or whatever ideas are generated.  If you are interested, let us know and we will put you all in touch.

GETTING HOLOCAUST TRAINING TO BE MANDATORY IN LOCAL SCHOOLS
This was a prior goal of ours & with huge thanks to our president Esther Finder, it has become a reality! As a social action activity, this project took a new direction for us.

Update: Our president, Esther Finder, spoke to a committee of the state senate and legislation has been passed to create a state center of excellence as a teacher's resource.  For additional details, contact us.  Esther's speech is one of the resource's on our speaker's bureau page.

A WWII HISTORY MULTI-PART LEARNING PROGRAM --
-- TO GIVE CONTEXT TO THE HOLOCAUST EXPERIENCE

This mini-course would teach about WWII outside of the Holocaust experience, to give context to the experience, and to make us more knowledge when we talk with others.  We need to locate someone knowledgable and able to teach this mini-course.  Do you know anyone? We are still looking.

VIRIGINA CHAVERA
Interest continues in the Chavera. Please contact us for names...

Based on member requests, we have formed a chavera in Virigina to help generate a local sense of connection.  We would also like to start holding some of our programming in Virigina.  If you are interested in the Chavera, or can offer your home, please let us know.  Several people have contacted us since we listed this idea, so if you are interested we will put you in touch with them!

EDUCATIONAL WASHINGTON VIDEO - for release at schools and lectures
While we still have an interest in this program, we have not yet found the right connections to make it work...

We are working to develop a locally-based Holocaust video which can be used for future education.  It will focus on local resident survivors & the Shoah Foundation has agreed to release their tapes to us for use and editing.  We've also received input from high school students on what they would like to see, and will be coordinating with local Survivor and 3rd Generation groups.  If you have experience in filming or know a film student who wants to work on this project, please let us know!  If you have any interest in this exciting project, please contact us. This will cost money, and so we will also expect to do some innovative fund raising.  We definitely need more people to make this a reality!

GENEALOGY ACTIVITY
We are working on ideas for a genealogy meeting, possibly at the museum.  Do you have any wishes or ideas to give us, or even energy to create an event?  If you have background or experience in genealogy, that would be very welcome too.

TALKING ABOUT WHATEVER IS ON OUR MINDS - AN OPEN MEETING
Will you join us?  Are you interested?  Maybe, a potluck?

SPEAKER IDEAS
Of course we have new speaker ideas, but if you have any ideas, let us know!
