We are a gathering place for survivors, child survivors, children and grandchildren of the Shoah in the Greater Washington Metropolitan area. Join us for programs on topics of interest, social gatherings, educational projects and social action. We work on Holocaust Remembrance in many ways. We are instrumental in planning the annual community Yom HaShoah Commemoration. We are continuing the Remember a Child program that the Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Friends of Greater Washington began 30 years ago to match a child having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in our community with a child who perished during the Shoah, too young to have had her or his own Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Historians, researchers, authors and political and policy makers such as Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, speak to our group on important issues. Members go out into community schools, churches, and civic groups to educate them about the Shoah and tell their parents’ stories. We have taken on educational projects such as becoming interviewers for the Spielberg Oral History Project. See a listing of past educational projects.
Join our long-running book group that meets virtually every 4-6 weeks for stimulating conversation, insights into common experiences and camaraderie. The group reads fiction and non-fiction and discussions are informed by the 2G experience. The group is open to all members of The Generations After. Learn more.
Throughout the year, our multigenerational community meets to celebrate events such as the Chanukah Party, summer Garden Party, Yom Ha-Atzmaut festivities, and special film showings and concerts. To see photos about some of these events, click here.
We monitor the plight of Survivors here and around the world and have rallied in many ways to secure appropriate funds to care for survivors in need. Members have signed petitions, met with social service agencies to gather facts, met with White House staff to explain the unmet needs of nearly half of all survivors who are living in poverty, and testified before Senate Committees for increased funding from Germany to assure it lives up to its obligations to care for every last survivor.
